Eye Conditions

Experience Compassionate Care at Carmel Vision Care

There are many different types of eye conditions that could be affecting your eyesight or may have long-term consequences if not treated properly or promptly. Below, we discuss some of the more common conditions, including amblyopia, blepharitis, cataracts, computer vision syndrome, dry eye syndrome, and strabismus.

Amblyopia, commonly referred to as lazy eye, is a loss or lack of development of vision, typically in one eye. This degenerative process often begins with an inherited condition and manifests during infancy or early childhood. Early diagnosis of amblyopia is crucial, ideally between birth and early school age, as this is when the brain determines its visual pathways and may neglect the weaker eye permanently.

Recognizing lazy eye is not always straightforward; a child with poor vision in one eye does not automatically have amblyopia. Therefore, it is recommended that all children undergo a comprehensive eye examination by age three, particularly if there is a family history of any eye condition or disease.

Blepharitis refers to an inflammation of the eyelid and eyelashes and is one of the most common and persistent eye conditions. It generally results from poor eyelid hygiene, low-grade bacterial infections (typically staphylococcal), allergic reactions, and/or issues with oil gland function. Although blepharitis can be managed, it cannot be cured completely. Treatment focuses on reducing bacteria along the lid margin and unblocking clogged glands.

Cataracts occur when there is clouding of the eye’s normally clear lens, resulting in progressive blurring or dimming of vision. They are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and are among the most common conditions associated with aging – by age 65, there's a 50 percent chance of developing cataracts, which increases to 70 percent by age 75. Initially, cataracts may have little impact on vision, but as they progress, they can make reading and other normal tasks difficult. In early stages, stronger eyeglasses and improved lighting may suffice, but when cataracts begin to interfere with daily life, cataract-removal surgery may be recommended, which is a common and successful procedure in the U.S.

Computer vision syndrome is characterized by symptoms such as neck pain, blurry vision, stiff shoulders, headaches, and watery eyes from prolonged computer use. These symptoms often arise from poor posture, dry eyes, eye muscle coordination, and insufficiently corrected vision. Since computer monitors are usually positioned 20 to 26 inches away, regular glasses may not be suitable for computer work. Specialized lens designs enhance the intermediate viewing area for computer tasks, accommodating this distance effectively.

Dry eye syndrome signifies a breakdown in the quantity or quality of tears that hydrate, cleanse, and protect the eyes. This condition is significant as tears safeguard the eye surface with each blink by removing dust and microorganisms. When this protective layer diminishes, eyes may feel gritty or burn, and sensitivity to light may increase, sometimes leading to blurred vision. If you suspect you have dry eye syndrome, consult your eye doctor. Proper treatment will not only enhance comfort but also protect your eye health. Eye care professionals can conduct tests to determine the presence of dry eyes.

Strabismus, commonly known as being cross-eyed, is a misalignment of the eyes caused by improper functioning of the eye muscles. This condition can lead to one or both eyes turning in various directions, resulting in irregular movement. Strabismus is often diagnosed in childhood and affects approximately 4 percent of children, regardless of gender. While it cannot be prevented, early intervention can mitigate complications. If you observe intermittent symptoms in your child, especially during times of illness or fatigue, it’s important to inform your eye care provider.
